poem from a wordle: the Flock

the Flock

Before the bitter winter comes,
the purple martins gather.
No extract of coal could be more black
than their glossy iridescent masses.

They trade away winter in hook-neck gourds
and staircase-less apartments
for the southern kiss of warmer days,
and the drooping mass of Spanish moss.

Mosquitoes bred in muddy sloughs
they pluck like cherries on the wing.
Their passing, thick as shadow,
is right and perfect on the sky
as a cat on a porch, blue lines on a page,
or a smile on a porcelain doll.

all that, and I had to go back to work in "staircase"

But you did, so bravo! I really like the images you've created here; purple martins, muddy sloughs, drooping moss and all!

Can only echo what has already been said. This was a pleasure to read, perhaps because your own pleasure was smiling through each line. Congrats,

Elizabeth

A wonderful idea worked out with a yeoman's craft. I love the shift in perspective, that a mosquito is surely a delicacy in the eyes of mosquito eaters.

If it were my poem I would not be done yet, feeling I could lift it from really good to great without much effort at all, just a few words.

Some of us feel that fantasy is the only sane way to deal with a wordle of 12 really diverse words but what we really mean is deal with them easily. You have demonstrated a way through that holds fast to this world.
